What Can Be Considered Payload and What Can Be Considered Towing

To differentiate between payload and towing, it is important to describe it as best as possible. Once you understand the difference, it is actually quite simple. The only thing that you must avoid is using the terms interchangeably because they mean completely different things. Payload is for carrying while towing is for pulling a trailer.

Any extra item that you have in your truck can be considered payload. Even if it is something as light as 20 pounds in your back seat, it can be considered payload because it is being carried in your truck or in the truck bed.

In order to be able to consider something as towing, then it has to be pulled behind the truck. This is typically done with a trailer. When factoring how much you can carry, you have to include the weight of the trailer in how much you are towing.
